The government of the Republic of Uganda has directed that Hoima City is granted a national stadium.
This is after the President of the Republic of Uganda His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni gave a directive in a meeting at State house on Wednesday 8th November that a 20,000 seater stadium should be built in the Western Uganda based City.
Hoima City however was not the only City in the race to land the sports infrastructure as other western Uganda based Cities in Mbarara and the tourism City of Fort Portal were in line, only for the Oil rich Hoima to win the race.
The stadium construction will boost Hoima’s chances of being a host City for the 2027 AFCON as two other Cities will be chosen from a short list that includes Fort portal and Lira to host the prestigious tournament that Uganda will co-host with fellow East African Nations Kenya and Tanzania.
The stadium will be constructed on a 10 acres piece of land donated by the family of the late Dr Rujumba in Mparo Cell, Hoima city.
The presence of the Kabalega International airport that is set to have its first Cargo plane land in December is said to have been a leading factor that won Hoima the race.
The start date for the stadium construction however has not been confirmed.
